Dr. Jan Dreyer , born 1960, was trained as banker from 1978 to 1980. During his articles (the German Referendariat) he was assigned i.a. to the American-German Chamber of Commerce in Houston, Texas, and a law firm in Los Angeles, California. He has been a lawyer in Hamburg since 1989. In 1993 Jan Dreyer started as an in-house lawyer for the shipyard Blohm + Voss AG. There he was mainly engaged in the conclusion of shipbuilding and repair contracts as well as international plant construction projects. After reorganisation of the yard he joined the law firm Dabelstein & Passehl in 1996 as a partner. Since 2000 he is the Deputy Managing Partner of Dabelstein & Passehl.Focus of Practice:
Jan Dreyer’s special areas of practice are ship building and supply industry including megayachts, commercial and naval vessels, ship finance and setting up of shipping funds under the "German KG-system" as well as insurance law, in particular the handling of hull insurance cases and P&I-matters, both contentious and non-contentious. The advisory assistance to companies regarding commercial and company law, including foundation and accompanying of foreign subsidiaries, form a further main area of Jan Dreyer’s practice. Jan Dreyer is active as arbitrator in shipping cases. He is regularly invited to speak on topics of insurance and shipping law on seminars and conferences both in Germany and abroad. From 1995 to 2005 Jan Dreyer served as a member of the legal committee of the Verband für Schiffbau und Meerestechnik e.V. (VSM) (Association for Shipbuilding and Marine Technology). Jan Dreyer is a member of the supervisory board of a ship finance corporation (Aktiengesellschaft) and serves as an officer (vice chair) in the Maritime and Transport Law Committee of the International Bar Association (IBA). Jan Dreyer is recognised as one of the leading insurance and reinsurance lawyers by "The Legal Media Group Guide to the World’s Leading Insurance and Reinsurance Lawyers" and named as expert in the "Top Legal 500" in the Maritime and Transport section for Germany, in "European Legal Experts" as well as in "Who’s who legal".
