Dr. Jan Backhaus , born 1968, qualified as a German lawyer in 2000. During his school days he spent one year in the USA and studied afterwards jurisprudence in Konstanz, Kiel and Paris. While studying for his doctor’s degree, which he obtained in 1998, he completed a supplementary study in the fields of European law and international business relations at the European College in Hamburg. From 2000 until 2005 Jan Backhaus was a lawyer with a major German law firm. There, besides advising on general economic law matters, he was at first mainly engaged in the conclusion of project and licence agreements in the IT-Business. Later he specialised on international plant construction projects, in particular in the field of renewable energies, and on insurance law. He joined Dabelstein & Passehl in the beginning of 2006 and is partner of the law firm. Focus of Practice:
The special areas of practice of Jan Backhaus are ship building and plant construction as well as insurance law. One of his main areas of activity is giving comprehensive legal advice to companies in the fields of ship building and renewable energies including the accompanying supply industry. In this respect his advisory assistance comprises in particular major plant construction projects, drafting and negotiating of contracts and legal disputes. Regarding insurance law Jan Backhaus advises in particular in the fields of industry insurance, marine hull insurance and employers’ liability insurance contracts as well as on issues concerning the law of insurance brokers.
